The seeds are planted.

Planting a cover crop for the winter gives us an opportunity to be in the garden all year long.  The two seed types we planted will help maintain the nutrients in the soil, also.

After getting out the plants and weeds from summer, we raked and raked to loosen the soil.
Then we planted the seeds.  The two seeds were different sizes and shapes.
Next we covered the seeds with straw.  The straw will act as a blanket to keep the seeds warm and moist until they sprout.

Gardeners Galore

The children worked together to dig a deep hole.
It is hard work to dig out the weeds, roots and all.  The children work cooperatively and persistently.
Turning the soil over hoping to find worms.

We continue digging out weeds in order to do a cover crop planting next week.  Growing winter rye will give us the opportunity to garden all winter.  And, it puts nutrients back into the soil in the Spring.
Many of us are in search of worm holes.  The children discussed the benefits of worms in our soil, including air and rain getting to the roots.
The children harvested many small carrots, mostly greens, to feed to Genie, the rabbit next door.

Genie enjoys the carrot greens we harvested.

Welcome!

Welcome to our first blog post!!

We are so grateful to the Dearborn Firefighters for coming to teach us about fire safety!  It was good to be reminded that we should never hide during an emergency.  It was fabulous to climb into the pumper truck.
